Jiunn Tzon Hwang, professor of mathematics, has been elected a fellow of the American Statistical Association for outstanding contributions and leadership in statistical science. The 2011 fellows will be recognized in a ceremony Aug. 2 at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Miami Beach, Fla.

A section of brick that was about 5 feet high and 2 feet wide fell off the Mathematics Building MA on W. 18th Avenue Wednesday morning. No injuries were reported, but officials said they do not know what caused the bricks to fall.

NEW YORK - CHILDREN of divorced parents often fall behind their classmates in mathematics and social skills and are more likely to suffer anxiety, stress and low self-esteem, according to a new study. Researcher Kim Hyun Sik, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the study showed that the detrimental effects on the children do not start until after the parents begin divorce proceedings.
